Mary Blair (FLAIR it up woman!)

I was in Books of Wonder the other day (18th st in Manhattan) when I came across a book about the illustrator Mary Blair and I instantly fell in love! The book is entitled "The Fabulous Flair of Mary Blair". Actually I have been in love with her work since I was a kid without even knowing it was hers. Dare I say it, I think she has been the most influential artist in my life without me even knowing it, oh my! When I was younger my grandfather made sure we had all of the disney movies on vhs and I was always drawn to the early ones like Peter Pan, Cinderella and one of my all time favorites the 3 Caballeros. Mary did the inpirational paintings for all of these films and most Disney films in the 1930's, 40's and 50's. Her most famous works are Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella and Peter Pan. Yes, she was the one to create all of those fantastical landscapes that we all associate with these stories! She also did other work that was not for disney (I have posted some below). I think her sense of color is amazing and so bold and I love how she mixes cartoon and fine art sensibility together. The sense of grandeur in her castles in Cinderella and the way she uses proportion is the stuff of wonderful dreams!

from the 3 Caballeros, and 2 shorts that she did artwork for that are from very early disney, all AMAZING!!!

I can't remember how I first came across this gem of a book but I've been eyeing it for quite some time now. Art of food? Food of art? It's gotta be love!!! By some probable misguided intervention of the divine, I lucked out for once and found that Strand had a copy in good shape and at a very reasonable price, so I went for it! It really wasn't in my power to resist such a beautifully designed large hardcover art book, lavished with a striking gold-foiled embossed jacket – generously showcasing Dali's unadulterated obsession with his food and his woman.

It's the stunning combination of gaudy 1970s opulence, abundance of ornate silverware and cutlery, extravagantly tacky table settings, morbid usage of taxidermy, and over-the-top sculpturing and plating of some of the most bizarre/frightening/delicious collages of foods, that allows for this spectacular glorification of one man's gastronomical insanity.

It's over 300 pages of a literal smorgasbord! Full of paintings, drawings, photos, collages, sculptures, philosophies, recipes and food! The shamelessly bad photographs I threw together honestly can't even begin to depict the variety of wackiness you will recoil from or laugh at or drool over.

Stuffed Artichokes? Yes, we are gonna stuff the hell out of these artichokes and stack them atop each other like a phallic monument. Then we're gonna erect (ha!) it inside this grandiose silver trophy cup filled with a cement of mashed peas, peeled avocados and pate de foie!

Calf Kidney in a Shell? Ooh, brandy marinated kidney goes into a soft quiche dough, then baked in its own marinade juices. Simple and delicious – just don't forget to shape your quiche dough into a, what else, kidney! Crucial step in full enjoyment of this kidney-kidney pie!

I recently spent some time up in boston visiting my dear friend W. Besides bringing me around to her favorite new (and old) places to eat, satisfying my lobster fix, getting drunk together at a scrumptious dinner party by a wonderful host, hitting up the thrift stores with me, and entertaining me with fascinating tidbits of her life as a medical researcher (growing human ears on mice, slicing cadavers and hairy dead knee parts, sitting in on haitian voodoo healing rituals, medical journals that reveal the horrors of laundromat hygiene pertaining to the human sperm, etc),

we also spent some time in the Massachusetts countryside and visited a vegetable farm. It was one of those anomalies in the fall weather where it was warm enough for us to scurry about the farm grounds wearing just a single layer of clothing. It felt amazing to be out in the countryside under such clear blue skies with no buildings or traffic or anything, feeling both the warmth of the sun and the crisp cool fall air tingling against your skin. Running around, scampering about and digging amongst the different patches to see what surprises laid beneath. Pumpkin, squash, carrots, turnips, leeks, lettuces, collards and other various leafy greens, herbs - fresh cilantro!!!! yummmmmmm.......... Too bad I had to leave before we got around to cooking them up. Though W did use the produce as part of the cooking school tutorials she posts.

She made pumpkin sweetened by boiling with dashi, salt, mirin (Japanese sweet wine) and sugar. Delicious stuff!

So it's been a month since I got back from home and between jet lag and Deb not being around, it took me pretty damn long to just get back into the groove of things.. But I did spend whatever nice weather outdoors grabbing brunches, walking around, bbq-ing, hanging out with friends, trying new food, finding even more new things to eat! And today is an awesome day because today marks the day when we learn all our hopes for the summer are about to come true - meaning 3 out of 3 bands that we were praying hard would make it out to NY will indeed be here! YEA!!!!!!

Meanwhile, Death by Drone is going to be in a few more stores this upcoming Fall season so it's all going good... Look out for stuff in stores late August or September!

We showed it over a month ago for Fall fashion week and finally got around to putting the story together in its entirety with a photoshoot.

This season, there are tops, skirts, coats, cardigans, hats, awesome bags (with toys!!!) and crazy ass dresses! We use vintage rhinestones on the dresses and bags that have them.

As always, all our illustrations are hand-silkscreened / hand-painted right here in New York!

wow, matt hollywood is playing the BJM show tonight and we're not there. hearing from a friend who's at the show right now. But Terminal 5 is a wretch so all's well with me just sitting here polishing off a PBJ and listening to a lethal combination of swallowtail/evergreen/whenjokersattack/openheartsurgery/truelove/stillborn on repeat. anton anton anton - you spew tales of diarrhea and runny noses, possess(ed) a ridiculously bandwidth unfriendly myspace page, moved to iceland and changed your last name to fjordson, but you damn sure write some good songs!

anyway, it has been a strange peculiar day that ended with me having an hour long conversation about the times and the people and the travesty that is modern day existence, with some french dude, on an empty street, in bushwick, in the rain. I reminded both of us of the fact that a chicken could run around after its head's been chopped off. He gave me his grandma's recipe for goat's cheese and grapes on baguette (green grapes! not too ripe!). And at the end, we just went back along our own ways, as two random people whose paths merely intersected briefly... Some meaning, not much, just enough.

Nothing like squandering away the (chinese) new year by listening to sad oldie tunes I grew up with. The thing about the Chinese language is that phrases can be so concise yet manage capture a multitude of nuances elegantly, poetically and beautifully... I don't know how to describe it to non-speakers. Anyway, I remember yelling at my dad from my bedroom about blasting/karaokeing this stuff at 9am on the weekends. I've come a loooonnnggg way... so...i was told that i don't post enough (which is true). So its time to get my lazy ass off the couch and onto the inter-web!!!

We went to LA a few weeks ago for the Tee Pee Records Manifest Destiny Festival- which was of course, beyond awesome. 9 straight hours of sludge, drone, drudge, mush, mind-melt, fuzz, mess, slow growing mold, and of course HEAD BANGING.....haha and of course the all powerful Obama was watching over it all (literally there was a huge cardboard cut-out of Obama in one of the stage wings- watching over the whole spectacle)

anyway- we also got to see nature..and i took lots of pictures of cacti.
We love cacti! we even have our own cacti in our rooms (Tiff you should take a picture of the hairy one and post it!)

fo, deb and i went to a friend's show on saturday in williamsburg and then decided to go wandering down by brooklyn heights and the promenade. i'm not really a picture taker so here are the few i did take when i felt like it.

it was a strange surreal night with the foggy weather on friday - the river, the lights, the cobblestones, old brick buildings, absurdly quiet streets and a hazy sequence of events involving bear sculptures, naked ghosts and secret buildings housing secret doors leading to secret places...

We made a flyer for the black angels / warlocks after-party a friend put together that for some reason didn't happen, but here it is anyways...

I caught the warlocks at mercury lounge the evening before with a really excited group of fans. I had no idea the mustache drummer and the bassist weren't in the band anymore. Anyway, the show was alright and I was just excited to see them at mercury after such a long time. Bobby just seemed really happy to be playing in the city. They definitely gave a much better show at southpaw the following night though. The lighting was better, the sound was louder and they ended with moving mountains!!! Bobby is my new hero with his brian jones haircut!

Back from the dead with one foot in the grave

So we've been busy with the shithole that practical life can be. Still are, but we're taking some time to put these photos up. Some are from the exhibition, some are from our graduation ceremony. I have the photographer's site lying around somewhere and I will put it up when I find it. (Thanks Brandon!!)

There are some bizarre ones that I guess our department decided not to put up on flickr, but I will get my hands on those soon. And our giant book of tiny characters too! Will put those up on the site soon.

So... it's down to the last part of installing and setting stuff up for wednesday. we are both just working away non-stop in the gallery space (and missed record store day)

there was no question that we were going to find time to make both the dead meadow shows this last week amidst everything else that was going on. yeaaaa! made it out to maxwell's on tuesday after much frustration with the damn path train. great small show, i was expecting it to be ridiculously crowded, but somehow it wasn't. got a good spot right up front next to the amps just behind all the 19 year old gear heads who stood religiously (still) in front of the pedal set up.

then deb's brother came into town and we brought him along to the music hall show which was pretty damn fucking insane too. saw quite a few familiar brooklyn faces there and ran into a friend or 2. i was going nuts nuts nuts nuts.

i think i melted thrice over.

Senior show postcards

So the senior show coming up in a few weeks requires individual postcards from both deb and i, so we knew ours had to somewhat go along because our thesis is together. so the main guideline was:

we were both going to have red rhinestone studded barb wires pouring out of our eyes into each other.

so we took some black and white pictures, went to the art store and got some supplies, each did our own thing in our own rooms (albeit a peek every now and then), and here's what happened...

I was listening to the mammatus record outside, doodling, scanning and photoshopping. then this one song came on and i wasn't quite fully aware since i was deep in work. at this point, i was fiddling around with the brain guts and hand reaching out part of the card and then i realized the music was just totally in sync with what i was doing and feeding me all these feelings! low heavy bass notes, slow pounding drums and a heart-wrenching roar and ughhhhhh, i am listening to the same song as i am writing this and i think i just wanna toss myself into the sea and mush into foam!

i looked back on my card just now after it was done and was telling deb how i got this whole weird human/deep sea fish creature prowling the ocean and sending out her evil fish minions vibe from it even though i did not consciously set out to make it that way.

and which brings me back to the name of the song i was/am listening to (i just repeated the song again).

ok...so as you read bellow, this week has been a pretty fucking awesome week in music for us.
the witch/titan/graveyard show on wednesday was AMAZING...now i have amazing new music to listen to (namely witch) and also a new crush...ahem ahem.
riding on that high (and the one from just watching Step Up to the Streets!), we went to another show last night at market hotel
and saw these are powers, old time relijun and some other great bands- the venue is an amazing space..lots of moshing again, we didn't quite join in but we were definetly going nuts jumping and just wriggling out to drone...fun fun fun! although it did take the assistance of a local crazy woman to help us find the place...somehow by looking at us she new exactly where we were going...hmmm wonder why?

so i went off to maine for a week and it was nice being by the coast and in the woods but it feels the best to get back after a 12 hour journey with no plans made for the evening and then realize that I had an awesome show waiting for me. all i did in maine was stuff i didn't have time to do in new york anyway - buy music (old dead meadow stuff) and toys (two playmobil figures and i'm majorly regretting the fact that i didn't get the toy accordian)

i made it back in time to catch witch, titan and graveyard at luna lounge. of course it was raining as it does everything we/i head out to luna.

deb and i missed the previous witch show due to bad timing/bad weather/sickness/crap and i'm so glad i didn't miss this one. also managed to catch graveyard (from sweden) and they were rocking it. the singer had that type of traditionally good classic rock voice which i don't hear too often. i was also happy i manage to catch titan doing more of their psych/prog/metal thing since the last time i saw them, they were very very metalled out.

deb bought the really sweet gig poster that looks something like this, only with a dark crimson red in it too. we can't stop ogling at it like how we can't stop listening to 'seer' by witch.

witch closed with seer and people went nuts. some dude in the front was majorly headbanding and hair flipping about 3 people's worth of space and then some kids decided to start moshing, which i am totally down for as long as it doesn't involve me. i was right on the sidelines to witness the shit when it happened at a cheeseburger show at the knitting factory. that was fine, i love seeing people going nuts. but i was right smack in the middle of this when it happened. 180 lb dudes and i don't belong in a mosh pit together. they wake up the next day vaguely remembering prancing around to sweet tunes, i wake up with major bruises. yep.

i think i was pissed off at one particular point in time when some guy crashed really hard into me that i literally kicked his ass - kicked.his.ass... between.the.butt.cheeks.semi.up.the.crack

i don't think he felt anything though... hmmm. gotta love those damn moshers.

We just set the site up and we are really excited that this is now somewhat official that we are starting this.

We will be posting ramblings on this blog and knowing us, that probably means a lot of music related stuff and random shit and tons of social commentary.

We will also be putting our artwork up on our site over the next few months as we prepare for our thesis exhibition, and starting the store, getting a business set up, yadda yadda yadda.
